Аннотация: This is the topic the annual conference arranged by the editorial staff of the "Sociological studies", October, 2005. Some leading sociologists offered their opinions on the questions of role and place of empirical studies in the existing approaches to sociological studies; significance of studying empirical sociology (i.a., its history); interrelations between empirical studies and the overall prospects for sociology; the most outstanding - under Russian conditions today - problems of empirical sociology. Symptomatically, most of the answers raise crucial issues of contemporary Russian sociology both as an academic discipline, research practices, and university teaching.
