Аннотация: In the sub-Arctic regions, the vegetation is limited not only by the temperature but also the deficiency of macro and trace elements. Another limiting factor, such as anthropogenic factor associated with the resource-extractive in- dustries, is continuously increasing its pressure on northern ecosystems. Tree-rings was shown to be a valuable proxy of atmospheric pollution and dendrochemistry, a multi-element study of tree-rings, is a promising method to trace environmental changes. Here we present the first results of elemental analysis of wood and soil from the ecosystems affected by the pollutants emitted by the smelters of Norilsk Industrial Region. Heavy metal (Ni, Cu) and sulfur (S) concentration in wood of larch growing under the direct impact of airborne pollutants from the Norilsk smelters was studied. The element content was defined with the use of XRF (X-ray fluo- rescence) for both dead due to pollution and still living trees at sites located at various distances from the sources of pollution, for a complex geo-ecological assessment of the studied sites. Elemental content of the wood samples was combined with the data on elemental content of soils. It was found, that the hydrogeological regime of the area, affects the content of heavy metals in soils, originat- ing from manmade emissions of the enterprises of Norilsk industrial region. The maximu m content in the studied elements in larch wood samples was found in the areas which are located on the way of gas and dust emissions in accordance with the wind rose. It is shown that the contamination of the explored areas is due to the air transport of anthropogenic emissions of companies, which is reflected in the accumulation of heavy metals and sulfur in the or- ganic-soil horizons. Preliminary results demonstrate a high potential of multi-elemental analysis of tree-ringsin detection of the features of changes in wood chemistry at one of the most polluted region of the world. Further research suggests to analyze the distribution of heavy metals in samples of wood with annualresolution for the detection of quantitative response on the content of HM in the annual rings of Siberian larch wood on the activity of the enterprises of the NIR.
