Аннотация: Among the variety of architectural forms of roofing, domestic and world practice of building from timber demonstrates the practicability of construction of grid shells, laced-grid vaults and the like, as along with high aesthetic indicators, these structures work as effective spatial systems. The vault dimension and form optimization are dealt with in the paper. In modern construction the possibility of erecting and reliable operation of expressive architectural forms is one of the key components for the future successful operation of an object. Expressive architectural forms of covering cannot but arouse an interest both from a consumer and from a technical point of view. And the use of such coverings, in particular grid ones in cultural construction, in the sector of sports, entertainment facilities, where the exploited roofing combines the reliability and high aesthetic appeal, causes natural scientific interest. However, along with the strict requirements of architectural expression, functionality and reliability of the structure, the cost of the applicable roofing, maintainability, material base equipment of the region remain the determining issues. Within the frame of timber grid structures development the staff of the Department of Building Structures and Controlled Systems of the School of Engineering and Construction of Siberian Federal University has developed a number of constructive solutions for timber grid shells with an orthogonal grid (Inzhutov, Loktev et al.,2011. Inzhutov, Deordiev et al.,2011. Loktev, Inzhutov et al.,2013. Loktev, Inzhutov et al.,2014). The basic approach adopted in the development of these membranes is an endeavor to maintain the benefits and overcome the shortcomings of existing design solutions of grid structures from timber (Loktev et al.,2013). Further search for the most effective grid shell design solutions with the orthogonal grid has resulted in the determination of the authors to get inclined to the use of glulam timber, the production of which is growing steadily both in Russia and in other countries (Naichuk et al.,2009). The use of glulam timber gives a designer a certain "design space", allowing to create the most rational form of the element (a variable in the considered structures), which is optimized, subject to stresses arising in the element. The synthesis of the above principles is realized in the development of grid vaults with the orthogonal grid from gable timber elements represented in Fig. 1. Of special mention is the authors’ related development in the field of wasteless production of timber gable elements (Inzhutov et al.,2011). © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
