Аннотация: The present paper deals with Mikhail Shishkin's short story Calligraphy Lesson and analyzes its cultural value as an object of translation. Basing the research on Marian Schwartz's English translation of Calligraphy Lesson, the author focuses the attention on the methodological approach used by the translator to reconstruct the cultural environment on which the text is based. The postmodernist principles of deconstruction, estrangement and pastiche, combined with the writer's idiostyle, generate the stylistic peculiarities of Calligraphy Lesson, which is characterized by a polyphony of themes. The Russian language (mostly presented by the Cyrillic alphabet) and literature (presented by the “strong” characters) may be considered as the key-theme, the main literary image of the text, a translation unit of heterogeneous nature. The thematic, linguistic and cultural peculiarities of the text will determine the necessity for the use of a culture-oriented translation strategy.
